How the Atmosphere Affects Cooking!

Vacationing in the mountains this summer? Did you know that water boils at a lower temperature when you are at a higher elevation?

So….when you’re prepping food at high altitudes, you might have to fine-tune the way you cook your usual recipes!

The atmosphere is different in areas above 900m. The air has less oxygen and atmospheric pressure, so cooking may take longer.

At sea level, there is higher atmospheric pressure as there is more air above you. However if you are in the mountains, the blanket of air above you is thinner causing water to evaporate faster and boil at slightly lower temperatures. For example at 2000m, water boils at around 93C, instead of 100C at sea level.

If you’re making homemade bread or baking a cake, the leavening gases may also expand more!

When is Thunderstorm season?

True or false ? Thunderstorms happen more often in the summer season.
.
.
This is TRUE! This is because the recipe for thunderstorms to develop include a temperature profile that includes WARM SURFACE AIR and COOLER AIR ABOVE.
.
.
Because there is more sunlight (aka energy) and longer time in the day for the air at the surface to heat up during the summer months, this makes it the most common season for thunderstorms.
.
.
The summer sun can heat up the ground more intensely - this creates the warm surface air and that then rises and mixes with the cooler air above. As the air cools while it rises, it condenses and creates unstable air and moisture - two ingredients for a storm to develop.

How far in advance can you predict the weather?

True or false ? It’s possible to predict the weather weeks or months in advance.
.
.
While some people swear by the farmer’s almanac, it is impossible to know what the weather will be like next month or next year. Most of the time, meteorologists have only low to moderate confidence on what will happen next week, let alone what will happen next month or year! This is especially true during shoulder seasons when weather can be very changeable!
.
.
Yes - seasonal forecasts exist, but they predict more of a trend and it is IMPOSSIBLE to pinpoint when or where it will rain or snow on long range forecasts.
